Pando in AutumnThis may look like nothing other than a grove of similar trees with the autumn leaves changing color, but its actually much more remarkable than that. This is, effectively, a single organism. This grove consists of a total of 47,000 trees, all of which are genetically identical, and all of which share the same root system. The trees are clones of each other, grown upward out of the root system at depth. It is believed to be the most massive organism ever discovered, with a mass of about 6 million kilograms and covering half a square kilometer. It’s unclear quite how old the organism actually is. It almost certainly dates back several thousand years as it would take at least that long for the roots to grow, but it could also have sat at a near steady state for some time and could potentially have lived through some of the previous glaciations. The system is actually under threat today; overgrazing by deer and elk in the area are preventing vary many new trunks from taking hold in the area. To preserve this marvel, the US Forest Service has undertaken a conservation campaign, including fencing off a portion of the tree and undertaking controlled burns to allow germination of new shoots in the protected area.-JBBImage credit: US Forest Servicehttp://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/fishlake/home/?cid=STELPRDB5393641Read more:http://www.atlasobscura.com/places/pando-the-trembling-giant

Living Wall

These vegetated surfaces don’t just look pretty. They have other benefits as well, including cooling city blocks, reducing loud noises, and improving a building’s energy efficiency. What’s more, a recent modeling study shows that green walls can potentially reduce large amounts of air pollution in what’s called a “street canyon,” or the corridor between tall buildings.

For the study, Thomas Pugh, a biogeochemist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, and his colleagues created a computer model of a green wall with generic vegetation in a Western European city. Then they recorded chemical reactions based on a variety of factors, such as wind speed and building placement.

The simulation revealed a clear pattern: A green wall in a street canyon trapped or absorbed large amounts of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter—both pollutants harmful to people, said Pugh. Compared with reducing emissions from cars, little attention has been focused on how to trap or take up more of the pollutants, added Pugh, whose study was published last year in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

That’s why the green-wall study is “putting forward an alternative solution that might allow [governments] to improve air quality in these problem hot spots,” he said.Compared with reducing emissions from cars, little attention has been focused on how to trap or take up more of the pollutants, added Pugh, whose study was published last year in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

some people say there’s a red string that connects fated lovers

psa don’t look at the notes bc there are so many people completely missing the point that these are non-romantic strings of fate and making jokes about where the red string “must be” and it’s making me really angry bc we can’t even have a good artistic representation of aromanticism without people desperately grasping for a romantic interpretation somehow

like the artist has specifically requested that people stop making this about their fandoms and romance bc it’s a personal piece about aromanticism

its great i loVE IT??? we need more aromantic… anything rlly and this is really beautiful!

This is brilliant for two reasons: it tells why a father will be so hostile to his daughter’s boyfriends — out of wanting the best for her, not just being a Territorial Male — and it it’s not just aimed at boys.
I’ve been so tired of seeing this trope played out the same way every time, where the dad’s the only one who gets to be protective, and the girlchild-who-can-conceive is sheltered from males-who-can-impregnate-her, while if her brother brings home a date, he is congratulated.
This doesn’t cover everything, but it takes a great step in the right direction.  (And it’s not homophobic, hooray!)

I wanna write a story where only I know the main character’s gender. First person. No first name never stated. Gender specific situations avoided.

Then stir in both a male and female possible love interest and watch the queer-phobic people internally combust about who they want the main to end up with.
